Socks can be knit out of almost any yarn from super fine 2ply lace socks through to 10ply cosy bed socks, I’ve even seen 20ply slipper socks. There is however yarn that is specifically designed for socks. This yarn is generally a blend of wool and a man-made fibre such as polyamide or nylon which assists in the wear of the sock especially in the heels, toes and on the ball of the foot.

Regia is a world leader in sock yarn. This German company has been making sock yarn since 1949 and are so confident in the quality of their standard sock yarn, they even carry a 10 year quality assurance

Specially designed sock yarn also comes in a huge choice of colours. You have your traditional solid colours but then you have the world of crazy dyeing to adventure into. There are the speckled yarns, which give little pops of colour through your socks, self-striping, that give bands of colours and now there is the full patterned yarns such as Regia Pairfect which knits to give 2 matching socks with amazing patterns.

Regia Yarns

Regia have also released a range of Premium Sock Yarns.

Regia Premium Silk is made from a high-quality blend of merino wool and silk. The undyed silk fibre in the yarn creates a light mélange look, which gives the Regia Premium Silk a special touch. In addition, the yarn is silky soft, glossy and temperature balancing.

Regia Merino Yak has a very special mélange effect, created by the natural brown colour of undyed yak fibres. Yak wool has particularly fine fibers for enjoyable, soft wearing comfort and it is also very warm but also lightweight. It looks particularly attractive in small Fair Isle and plait patterns.

Regia Premium Bamboo consists of 30 % bamboo viscose. The addition of bamboo gives the yarn an extra-soft hand and an elegant shimmer. Good breathability for optimal wearing comfort, perfect for the Australian climate.

The Regia Premium range is great for any 4ply pattern, its easy care makes it perfect for garments and baby knits and the luxury yarns make then so soft.
