Recommended Needle Size
Commonly they use between a 6mm and a 7mm knitting needle or crochet hook.
Common Yarn requirement
To knit a beanie you will need approximately 100g of yarn. Depending on width and length a scarf will need between 300g an 800g.
Selecting the right yarn
When selecting yarns it's important to be aware yarn weights are not an exact measurement. Some yarns classed as 12 ply by one manufacturer could be a 14 ply with another. This is why it's important to knit or crochet a gauge swatch. This allows you to both check the feel of the fabric and the needle size to use (again all knitters have a slightly different tension)

FAQs
Is 14 ply yarn chunky?
Yes, 14ply yarn is often referred to as bulky yarn. It is categorised as a category 5 yarn.
Is 10 ply or 14 ply better?
It is not a case of one being better than the other, they are just different thicknesses of yarn. The best yarn is the one that gives you the correct feel, drape and gauge for your project.
Is chunky the same as bulky yarn?
There is not a huge difference between Chunky and Bulky yarns and the terms are often used interchangeably. Generally Bulky yarns are slightly thicker than Chunky yarns.
Is bulky yarn good for beginners?
Bulky yarn is great for beginners. The larger needles give bigger stitches making it both easier to see as well as growing quicker! We recommend a couple of balls of 14ply yarn and 7mm knitting needles for the beginner knitter. Lighter colours are also easier to work with as a beginner as it's easier to see the different parts of each stitch than with dark yarn.
